Cheap is the New Chic
You don't need us to remind you of this, but the economy is awful. It seems that the effects have finally trickled down (or rather up) to even those of us fortunate enough to have disposable income. Consumer psychologist Kit Yarrow explains it this way to CNN:
"A year ago, what was considered the ultimate status symbol would have been the chicest bag or the most luxurious outfit," Yarrow added. "Now what's chic is being the most knowledgeable and efficient at saving money."
We can't help but think that good things will come of this (except if you make your living from ultra-high end shoppers, that is) -- as Yarrow explains, "we have moved from an era of conspicuous consumption to an era of considered consumption" -- sounds pretty good, doesn't it? We take it as a sign of the times that the article even mentions a Goodwill fashion show, and does it without the slightest hint of irony or snark. While we may not be shopping at our local Goodwill anytime soon, a little bit of restraint and common sense is starting to sound really good after the excesses of the past years. Time to put away the bling-bling and spend on quality!

China Fashion Week Delivers Some Strange Designs
Designers who show in Paris have always been considered among the most avant garde in the world, but China Fashion Week took it to a new level recently with its kooky creations that included a polka dotted body suit affixed with clocks, a comic book-esque checkered jumpsuit with cat ears and paws, and colorful Harajuku girl-inspired ensembles (replete with stuffed animals of course). There was also a smattering of walking metal art sculptures and candy colored confections with matching tights!

But while the designs tended to skew more funny than fabulous, not all was lost. There was a nod to the ever-so-prominent military trend (this is a communist country after all) and edgier silhouettes emerged with the sculpted shoulder jackets (a la Balmain).

Click through to see the interesting mix of Chinese designs! Eat your heart out Alexander McQueen!

Polaroid film has been laid to rest by its founding fathers, but the iconic instants are in full revival mode thanks to artists like Jeremy Kost (a la RoidRage). Kost shot the glitz of fashion week with the gritty, poorly exposed and yellowing film.

The result was slightly different from the lushly saturated images in our Faces gallery, or the precisely documented moments in Elizabeth Lippman’s Work and Wonder.

And only on Polaroid would Betsey Johnson baring her teeth look kitschy instead of crazy.

Thanks, Jeremy!

In any case, we want to know what you think of Bruni’s fashion choice: yay or nay?

Have you or would you rock clothes from the kids’ department? Leave a comment!

Stella McCartney pairs oversized items like this long hoodie in heather grey ($88) with girly bits like a tulle skirt in silver coin ($88).

A plaid shirt ($38) is an up-to-date way to keep warm. Paired here with a raglan tee in fossil blue ($28), knitted leggings in heather grey ($78), cable hat in charcoal heather ($28) and hi top sneakers ($48).

The yellow hooded fisherman's mac ($48) reflects the rough and ready spirit of this collection. Worn here with a slouchy hat in charcoal blue ($28) and duckboots in ashphalt ($58).

This grey chunky cardigan coat ($78) is signature McCartney design. Pairing it with a mauve ruffle dress ($58), cable tights in iron ($14) and hi top sneakers in sugar coral ($48) makes the look kid friendly.

It looks like Carla Bruni, is taking a page out of Michelle Obama's style book and giving democratic fashion a chance -- um, as well as children's fashion.

As first reported by The Huffington Post, the typically Dior-clad French First Lady/model/singer performed "And I Love Her" alongside Harry Connick Jr. on "Le Grand Journal" wearing a T-shirt, jeans and shrunken band jacket from the Stella McCartney for GapKids line.

So, Bruni sang a Beatles song, wearing a Beatles-inspired jacket, designed by a Beatle's daughter -- we love it!

When StyleList chatted with McCartney at the launch of her Gap collection last month, the designer actually confided that she's been eyeing the fashionable "Miller" jacket -- named after her son and the most expensive piece in the collection, at $128 -- for herself.

"The military jacket is sort of the star of the show," she said. "If you take it up to the larger sizes, I think we can squeeze into it. I know I'm going to."

Perhaps the reason the Sgt. Pepper-themed jacket (which was also favored by Michael Jackson) is unavailable on Gap.com is because adults (like these editors at Grazia UK) have co-opted the best pieces of the GapKids collection for themselves, à la Bruni.

Here's a look at the Stella McCartney for GapKids collection and the jacket Bruni wore, below.

Ruvh Carey Mulligan Rejects Anna Wintour’s Oscar D

Whatever actress Carey Mulligan decides to wear to this year’s Oscars the fashion police better go easy on her.

Though the newly blonde Brit is a fresh fixture on the red carpet, she has shown style courage well beyond her years by flat out rejecting Anna Wintour’s fashion advice.

Mulligan, who is nominated in the Best Actress category for her performance in “An Education,” tells People StyleWatch that the revered Vogue editor suggested she wear something short to the Oscars.

Mulligan reportedly told Wintour that she didn’t need any dress tutoring. “I was like ‘No, that wasn’t what I was thinking when I was six-years-old.’”

Ahhhh, we love a girl who has her Oscar attire figured out by the first grade.

The young starlet didn’t say exactly what kind of short frock Wintour recommended, but we can imagine that the editrix had a sleek, couture, best-dressed list number in mind. After all, Mulligan is a true gamine petite and too much dress might overwhelm her small frame.

That said, we can already hear the “what-was-she-thinking?” tongue-lashing fashion pundits would dish out the minute the ingenue stepped onto the red carpet in an above-the-knee dress. Cue Joan Rivers: “Carey, dear, did you get lost on your way to the Grammys?”

We’re pretty sure, however, that Mulligan is not, um, short on designer offers. And while some British critics lamented her decision not to wear a homegrown designer to this recent BAFTA awards, most raved about her sweeping black and white patterned dress (above) by French designer Vionnet.

Meanwhile, read about the alleged influence Anna Wintour had over model Maggie Rizer’s hair color.

Lxan Bandana + fangs = Fangdana – Last minute Hall

Bandana + fangs = Fangdana - Last minute Halloween ideas
Let's face it, if you don't have this year's Halloween costume picked out already, you've procrastinated to the very last possible moment to throw something together -- and that usually doesn't work out too well. What you need is something simple, something quick, something ... fangy. There's nothing like the convenience having your Halloween costume hidden away in your back pocket -- that's why we really love the Fangdana.

Look, it's nice to go all out on an elaborate Halloween costume that takes months of careful planning, but we've passed the 2 minute warning here. Plus, sometimes it's kinda weird and creepy to see people take their Halloween costume too seriously. The Fangdana provides just enough costume action to get into parties, but conveys a sense of apathy that lets everyone know that you're too cool for costumes.

At first, we thought the Fangdana had plastic fangs attached to the front -- but apparently they've been printed on. If we were going to rig one of these babies up for a party, we'd stop at the costume store and pick up a pair of vampire false teeth. Just a thought.

Order the Fangdana here for £10.20 ($16.80).
