Fabiola Beracasa at New York Fashion Week: What People Are Wearing In the Freezing Cold
New York Fashion Week has been blustery cold and to find out how fashionistas are coping, we dispatched our resident style correspondent Fabiola Beracasa to hit the tents at Bryant Park. In this episode of "Fab on the Street' she queries editors, stylists, and models about sacrificing style for comfort in sub zero temps.

Also on people's minds? Valentine's Day of course! Find out what our interviewees are planning to wear - or not wear in one woman's case - for their evening de amor.

4pmo Gemma Ward to Quit Modeling Over Weight Gain

Catwalk cattiness has claimed a victim!

Australian supermodel/sometimes actress Gemma Ward is quitting the modeling business amidst criticism about her weight, the model’s agency told the Daily Telegraph.

The 22-year-old beauty has been the subject of Internet taunts after being spotted with a fuller figure last week, the paper reports.

Photos of the more voluptuous model surfaced online, and comments poking fun about her piling on the pounds reportedly followed. (In related news, we’ve taken away Karl Lagerfeld’s laptop.)

Ward has been the subject of fierce scrutiny about her weight since she took a break from modeling early last year in the wake of rumored boyfriend Heath Ledger’s death in January 2008, according to the paper,

Clearly, the attacks have taken their toll.

“Gemma hasn’t committed to returning to modeling any time soon,” a spokeswoman for her agency, Vivien’s Model Management, told the paper.

Ward’s weight gain made headlines this past January when she hit an Australian beach in a bathing suit that showcased her new curves.

“I was really surprised when I saw her, considering what she used to look like,” a source told the Sunday Telegraph at the time. “I had to do a double-take after I saw how much weight she had put on.”

While there’s no doubt that Ward has put on some weight, we think the public needs to cut her some slack — we’d rather see bodacious than bony any day! Besides, these days, the catwalk is showcasing varying body types.

What do you think? Should Ward let the critics stop her from modeling? Leave a comment (above left)!

While Gemma Ward is blasted for being too heavy, Miranda Kerr was recently called out for being too skinny.

eBay WTF of the Day: Padding for all eight of your breasts
Seriously? It's like a display of shoulder pads for Russian nesting dolls.

This set of pads to make your breasts look bigger (both in swimwear and bras!) is weird. There's something about the hot pink background, too. Very modern art. Very...teeth. Or unpainted fake nails. Or thirds of porcelain teacups. Or something.

Breast padding? Well, it's certainly not the first thing that comes to mind. Still, the listing says: "Make you a cup size Bigger Bra Pads."

Do they work? Probably. Will it look natural? Maybe. Will it feel weird? Definitely. WTF? Hook us up with some socks. This is America.

yuzs eBay WTF of the Day- Leather, fox, and failur

eBay WTF of the Day: Leather, fox, and failure
Here we are, a crime against leather and foxes alike.

Places fox fur does not belong:

The ocean.Guernsey (there are no foxes on the isle of Guernsey). All over a leather jacket. WTF?

It's like someone took a sort of ugly leather jacket and decided to "improve" it by putting a fox vest over it.

The fox fur is beautiful, we'll give you that, but this combination is a disaster and you know it, Fivesisters23. Even if you zip off the zippered arms, we're still gonna see that weird gray leather bit at the bottom there.

You don't even show us what the front looks like.

This is a clustershag of animal death. WTF?

pcvm eBay WTF of the Day- Bad jean jacket #1_3650

eBay WTF of the Day: Bad jean jacket #1
It must be fall. Get out your bad jean jackets.

Here, on sale from Cerry5354, we have a green satin disaster. This is like a castoff from that scene in Return to Oz when Dorothy had to touch everything that was green to bring Oz back to life or something, I don't know, I was only half watching by that point because that Rock dude really freaked my shiz out. And the flying moose box. WTF, moose box? Anyway, all the stuff that was green in that scene was like, really awkwardly and sort of aggressively green. Like this jacket.

Also, can we take a moment to appreciate the fact that Dorothy was played by Fairuza Balk? Thanks.

Ahem. We intend to bring you a good helping of bad denim jackets this fall, so you can avoid any confusion about what is and is not all right to do with your scissors and your Bedazzler.

The lesson of this coat:Don't cut the arms off your denim jacket and replace them with green satin, throw the cuffs back on, and then lace some of the leftover satin up by the pockets. WTF?

tnog Donna Karan Fall 2010 – Runway Review_446

DESIGNER: Donna Karan

INSPIRATION: The color black, which kicked off the designer’s 25-year legacy; her urban aesthetic; and the transformation of the power woman she has continued to dress throughout her tenure

TOP LOOKS: Laser-cut lace shearling cardigan coat with taffeta skirt; magenta wool, lace, and organza cocoon jacket with matching skirt; lynx fur coat with organza tweed skirt; an I-could-live-in-this super-sized blue chunky knit cardigan with jersey skirt; grayish-green satin bustier with long skirt

ACCESSORIES: Slouchy black hats by Stephen Jones; collar necklaces reminiscent of Elizabeth I; and stackable bangles by Robert Lee Morris

WHO WAS THERE: Susan Sarandon, Demi Moore, Brooke Shields, Marisa Berenson, Bernadette Peters (behind them in the second row!), Rachel Zoe with her camera crew in tow

WHAT WE THOUGHT: This year, Donna Karan is celebrating her 25th birthday in the fashion business. That is no small feat, folks! For her fall show she focused on her original springboard elements fast-forwarded into modern silhouettes. That meant that the bodysuit was back. (We also saw it yesterday at Rachel Roy.)

Her matte jersey one-piece was worn under cocoon coats in sumptuous variations — electric blue velvet, fur-trimmed black, laser-cut lace. These materials and treatments add texture to the collection with aplomb.

With looks this cool, one can only hope we’ll have another 25 years of Donna.

ppwb Donatella Versace Spills on ’90s Supermodel D

Donatella Versace has seen better days, and by that, she means she misses the heyday of the real supermodels.

The Italian designer prefers personalities to today’s blank-slate, walking clothes hangers and dishes to Love magazine on the crazy catwalk days of the early ’90s — think one-name household monikers, as in Christy, Cindy, Naomi and Linda, reports the Independent UK.

Hitting newsstands tomorrow, Love’s “Fashion Icon’s” issue with naked supermodels on its cover, has Donatella wishing for more runway icons in the making.

“There is not enough ego!” the designer lamented. “Now is a bad moment. Now we need something. We need a special personality. We need to feed the egos of these girls. Somebody like Kristen [McMenamy] who had a huge ego. Beautiful…”

While the latest round of robotic Sashas and Valerias also have our heads spinning, are we really ready for a true supermodel comeback?

For his Fall ‘91 show, Donatella’s late brother, Gianni, cast Christy Turlington, Linda Evangelista, Cindy Crawford and Naomi Campbell all in the same show and together they sang George Michael’s “Freedom” on the runway.

Donatella insists it’s all about championing fun.

“There is an idea of neutrality in models now. Little make-up, no expression, like a robot… That is very stupid. It is almost as if the models have to have the appearance of something serious, to give an intellectual base, but they themselves are rarely like that,” the bleach blonde designer told the magazine.

“And the roots of fashion are essentially fun. It is something that women wear to make themselves feel better, that shouldn’t be forgotten. When you take the joy out of fashion, it is not fashion any more.”

But along with big egos come big personalities, and in fashion’s case, sharpened claws. Donatella dishes on some behind-the-scenes catfighting:

“Kristen [McMenamy] was a big problem with my brother at first — she was crazy; Gianni just did not understand right away. The stories! Ha! Between her and Linda [Evangelista], it was like watching a movie that never ends…

“One day they had a fight about roots. Kristen had arrived with black roots in blonde hair, and Linda arrived with black roots in blonde hair; and both of them went mad, both saying they were first. Really, that is a big thing for models — roots!”

A backstage fight on roots? At least this was pre-Lady Gaga’s two-tone yellow locks (we have a feeling the supermodels may have lost that one).

We do see Versace’s point, fashion shows have increasingly become about who’s in the front row and not who’s on the runway.

However, while Donatella pines for more memorable mannequins, the designer herself isn’t exactly lagging in the Hollywood game. She was the mastermind behind launching the label’s most celebrity-embraced collection, Atelier Versace, with the red carpet in mind.

And if you tack on her silver screen cameos in “Zoolander” and “The Devil Wears Prada,” you’ll see Donatella has eclipsed those robotic models as a household name.

As for Versace’s Spring 2010 campaign featuring Mick Jagger’s youngest daughter, Georgia May Jagger, we’re wondering if Donatella is doing as she suggests and pumping the teenager’s ego. Rock star progeny plus over-inflated ego? Sounds more to us like a recipe for a fashion disaster.

If one thing is for sure, the “supers” have staying power. Cindy Crawford has parlayed her modeling career into a business.

endj Double your wardrobe by wearing your clothes

Double your wardrobe by wearing your clothes upside down
Jennine, the uber-stylish blogger behind The Coveted, has been doing something interesting lately - she's taken to wearing her clothes upside down.

It looks better than it sounds - here she turns a sweater dress into a cowl-neck crop top. It's pure genius!

We like her theory that wearing clothes differently "elevates your IQ by encouraging experimentation." It's also good for the earth. In her words,
Part of being green is buying organic, sustainable fabrics, vintage, recycled...getting the most wear between washes. You can be the most green by buying nothing at all. How do you keep up when you aren't buying anything new? Like an artist turning the canvas to get new perspective, I've seemed to taken a liking to turning my clothes around...
It undoubtedly takes a certain level of confidence to pull this off, but since it doesn't cost anything, we're willing to give it a shot. How about you? UPDATE: A big thank you to reader Nuala who pointed us to another blogger who does this, fellow Bostonian Dreamecho. (Pictured: Two-Timing Sweater by Anthropologie)

Clubbing in Winter - How Not to be Cold
"Oh my god, that girl must be freezing."

You know what we're talking about. You're heading home from dinner or out for drinks and some skinny little thing is standing there with like, no clothes on, waiting to get into a hot nightclub. Clubbing in winter without looking like a douche is tricky, but it must be done! Dancing can really raise your body temperature -- and keep off the pounds, too. Lemondrop has put together a great collection of tips, and here's what we think:

We agree when Lemondrop's article, Sexy, Not Skimpy: Winter-Proofing Your Club Clothes, says to put on some pants or at least tights, go easy on the wintry accessories like mittens and scarves, and to keep your shoes closed-toe, but we want to warn you that the blazer-over-a-dress thing is like, kind of black diamond difficult. Make sure you look like a Gossip Girl and not like an 90's child star like Blossom or Clarissa in their mismatched, dated glory (hey, we agree the look was once glorious). And nipple shields? As if.

We've always gone with the "wear a sweater you can take off and stuff in your jacket sleeve when you check it" trick.

Clothes That Make a Peep
Most people wait until after college to begin pursuing their career of choice -- but not Amelia Lindquist.

The Parson's School of Design student has opted to launch an online store -- peeps.org -- and sell her handmade rompers, headbands and leggings to the masses in the meantime. (Thanks to The Coveted for tipping us off on her talent.)

Our favorite item, the giraffe-print dress pictured above, is not only cute but costs a budget-friendly $50.

From studded, stretch headbands to bullfighter-inspired, tasseled leggings, Lindquist's items are offbeat, charming and indie in the best sense of the word.

(And with a shout-out on Teen Vogue's blog already under her belt, we can't wait to see what she does after graduation.)
